Vitiligo (Leucoderma) in Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, Vitiligo is known as SHWITRA or Shweta kushta or Kilas. It occurs due to imbalance of all the three doshas namely Vata, Pitta, Kapha. These three doshas vitiates Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda and Majja dhatu. Hence it is termed as Tridoshaja.
According to Ayurveda the main causative factors are Viruddha-Ahar (food incompability), excessive mental stress or worries. These lead to formation and accumulation of toxins in our body and malfunctioning of body’s immunity. Both these factors destroys melanocytes and can cause appearance of white patches on the various parts of body.
Treatment is given to pacify the imbalanced body energies, cleanse the blood and restore its color. Ayurveda considers poor digestion to be the main root cause of this disease. Improper digestion causes the build-up of toxins in the tissues and blood. This leads to depigmentation. So the most important part of ayurvedic treatment is to restore digestion by following diet and lifestyle guidelines. In addition to this, proper assessment of the causative factor is also important, that should be managed by appropriate Ayurvedic treatment.
That is why Ayurvedic treatment of white patches is based on improvement of immunity and rectification of the problem from root.
Vitiligo (Leucoderma) Treatment in Ayurveda

Following factors are considered for Treatment plan:
- Age of patient
- Site of Vitiligo patch
- Whether the patch is stable or spreading
- Is itching present or not
- Past medication history
- Present illness
- Colour of patch

Internal Treatment
- After proper examining the patient is given various herbal combination to remove the toxins, from intestinal track for proper digestion of food and improves the absorption of medicine, essential vitamins and minerals.
- Purifies the blood and stops the disease from spreading.
- Works on Manovaha strotas for releiving stress.
- Regularize vitiated dosha in body that is responsible for spreading the disease.
- Strengthens the immune system.
External Treatment
After few weeks of treatment with the herbal medicines of GASC, squeezing of white patches starts. In some cases squeezing/compression/shrinking of the patches starts from the periphery of a patch. Visible change in skin colour appears as the area converts darker along the periphery of patches and the darker skin area formed by medicines gradually covers all the white/pale skin area resulting in closing of a patch, which later mixes up with normal skin.
While in some cases small darker spots appear on the mid of white patches. Gradually, these darker spots spread and cover the entire area of a white patch converting the patch area into normal skin.
In some cases the patch area converts pink/pale in colour in the beginning which later mixes with normal skin colour by getting darker.
Pranayam is advised daily morning to release stress and improve blood cirulation.
Important Message:
The most important thing is to start the treatment by the specialized doctor as soon as one notices the first patch.
If Ayurvedic treatment is started at this initial stage by an expert doctor then it can arrest further spread, gets cured and generally doesn’t relapses.
It is observed that patient gets misguided by general doctors who gives temporary suppressing treatment including steroids which disturbs the internal mechanism of body and in due course of time the disease flares up making it difficult to treat.
It is advised to the patients that they should stick to one pathy at a time. One should not try two pathies for same disease like Allopathy and Ayurveda, Homeopathy etc as it may interact with each other and can complicate the disease.
